What Is Candle Magic?

Candle magic is a very popular form of spell-craft.  Anyone can do candle magic - you do not need to be a witch, or have any prior knowledge of magic or spell crafting.  Its extremely versatile and best of all, its very inexpensive.  Candle magic can be as basic as possible for beginners, or woven into more intricate spell craft and ceremonies for those more practiced in the art of magic.

Burning candles invokes in us a feeling of calm serenity, and gets us in touch with the earth and the natural forces of the universe.  Gazing into its flame can help us to meditate, to get in touch with our inner selves and to manifest our hopes and desires.  Everyone of us feels something sacred as we light a candle and contemplate it.  This is because we realise deep inside of us that the small flame is a representation of the flame of divinity within each and everyone one of us.  Candle magic can promote our connection with the Divine, and its an ancient tool of spell crafting and manifestation.

History Of Candle Magic

Candle magic is based upon the ancient art of Pyromancy.  Pyromancy was one of the earliest forms of divination known to man; it is said that in Ancient Greece, virgins at the temple of Athena in Athens regularly practiced pyromancy.  It is also very possible that followers of Haphaestus the Greek god of fire and the forge practiced the art.

In ancient China, Pyromancy was practiced in the Neolithic period   and the Shāng and Zhōu dynasties in the form of burning or heating oracle bones - usually the shoulder blades of oxen or the shells of turtles - to produce cracks which were then read as portents.

The most basic form of Pyromancy is that in which the diviner simply observes the flames from a sacrificial fire, a candle, or any other source of flame, and interprets the shapes which he or she sees within them.

Man has long stared into flames to divine the future, the truth, or to manifest his will.  Candle magic as we know it today is simply a variation of a long held tradition that has held true in many cultures throughout the ages.

How Does Candle Magic Work?

Candle magic works because it is a way of focusing your intent; by focusing your intent in a ritual or ceremonial way, you are tunnelling your own personal power to manifest your will.  This is how all magic works - including divination.  In fact, candle magic is often used in divination work, too.  It works on the principles of the colour of the candle; what type of oil you use on it; the sigils you carve upon it; and the type of divinity you call upon to invoke your magic.  Below you will find definitions of candle colours and their meanings, and you should note that you will find many variants on this information.  That's ok too, because we are the ones who make the magic work, by believing in it and using it.  So don't become confused and bogged down with conflicting information; just take what resonates with you and use it!  Your faith and your intent is what makes the magic happen - not the definitions.
