The 7 Healing Chakras: Unlocking Your Body's Energy Centres By Brenda Davies

The History Of Chakras
It is important to realize the chakras come from an ancient written Indian tradition known as The Vedas. They were written from 2000 to 600 BC, mostly by the Indo-European invaders of India, who were known as the Aryans. Lore says that the Aryans invaded India riding in chariots, and this is where the original meaning of the word "chakra" comes from, referring to the chariot wheels of the Aryans. The word is also a metaphor for the sun.
Chakras are mentioned as psychic centres in the ancient Yoga Upanishads and Yoga Sutras. Chakras feature strongly in Kundalini yoga. The main knowledge and text of chakras that the Western world has today comes from a book called The Serpent Power published in 1919 featuring ancient texts about the Chakras. The word Chakra is Sanskrit for disc or wheel.
What Are Chakras?
Each chakra represents a psycho-physical energy centre within the body. Each one corresponds to a number of behavioural characteristics, health attributes within the body, and stages of personal spiritual growth. These energy centres are affected by the way a person runs their daily lives and can be either "clear" (healthy) or "blocked", (unhealthy.) They can also be either "open" (aware) or "closed" (unaware) depending on the personal stage of development in life. There are seven major chakras in the body, and many other smaller secondary chakras often referred to as "meridians." The seven major chakras are concerned with emotions and spirituality, while the secondary ones are concerned with action and physicality.
Each of the seven major chakras also represents a particular element up to the fifth chakra (earth, water, air, fire and sound.) The sixth and seventh chakras main focus are thought and spirituality. In Kundalini yoga, techniques are taught to awaken the dormant "Kundalini energy", which can be made to leave the first chakra and spiral upwards through the others causing deep spiritual experiences and learning.
What Do You Do With Chakras?
The understanding and awareness of the seven major chakras means that you are able to balance your chakras through meditation and lead a more balanced life because of it.
