Change And Transformation
The Death card means that something in someone's life is coming to an end. It does not mean that they or anyone they know is going to die; the tarot cards never reveal this knowledge, it is not something we are meant to be foretold of.
Its literal meaning is an ending of something; it could be a relationship, a period within your life, a job, an event. Its herald is simply the ending of something, a closing of a chapter within a person's life, not a description of what it is that is ending. To determine what is ending, the rest of the cards in a layout must be read in conjunction with the Death card.
The Death card is not a negative card. Its message can be joyous! Because everything must change, and all things, even good things, must come to an end - for example, a pregnancy ends in the birth of a new baby; that chapter of carrying a baby within the womb is then closed in the woman's life. This is an example of how the Death card can in fact be a joyous herald in a reading. The Death card could indicate an ending of any kind, of either positive or negative. It itself, the card is neutral.
Relationships
The Death card in a relationship reading does not necessarily mean the death of the relationship. The other cards in the reading would need to be looked at. It could mean the ending of something within the relationship. For example, a couple becoming engaged could have the Death card appear in their reading. The card would be depicting the ending of their courtship, the ending of that phase in their partnership. A closing of a chapter.
Reversed
When Death appears reversed, the ending of something is still approaching, but the person is afraid and fighting the change in their life. They are hanging on to what they have now and refusing to move on to a new stage. Fear of change and of the unknown is keeping them from moving on in their life's path. As the change is going to happen anyway, because all things must end, this struggle is pointless. To truly grow they must embrace change and face their fears. It can be sad when a chapter in our life changes, but we must accept it and carry on.
