Self Entrapment

When the Devil appears in a reading, it means someone has lost sight of their spiritual path in life.  They have trapped themselves in material, physical or other self-indulgent concerns and are not paying attention to what really matters.  They are living to excess and refusing to learn certain life lessons and move on from a negative situation.  They are allowing themselves to be corrupted. 

The person may complain of the situation they are in, but they are not prepared to do anything about it or change it.  As in the picture of the two people on the card, the person being read could in fact escape their situation if they really wanted to.  They are aware that they are in a negative place with what they are doing or who they are with but they are happy with the status quo and not prepared to make the effort required to extricate themselves from their situation. 

The Devil often appears when substance abuse of some kind is occurring such as drugs, drinking or over-eating.  It can also appear when someone is allowing themselves to be abused by another in some manner. 

Another typical scenario of when this card appears is when someone becomes obsessed with the material or sexual aspects of their life and loses sight of any higher purpose goals in their life.  If all a person cares about is money, appearance or sex, for example, the life loses all meaning.  If a person allows themselves to be trapped by excess they lose their sense of self. 

Relationships

This card appearing in a relationship reading indicates that a person is in a bad relationship but they are accepting their negative situation and not doing anything about it or to change it.  Although they may complain about it or worry about it they are not prepared to actually implement any changes or leave the negative relationship - "better the devil you know".  This card can depict a relationship chained by jealousy, insecurity, domination or sexual obsession. 

Reversed

The devil reversed indicates that a person is aware of the negative situation they are in, and has a desire to change it or leave it. They are now ready to open their eyes and take control of their life. They clearly see what has happened and the trap they have gotten themselves into. They are ready to seek the help they need and walk away from all that is stopping them from moving on in their life's path.
