Self Imprisonment
When the Eight of Swords appears in a reading, it is a symbol of someone who feels they have no power in their situation; they believe they are "stuck" and that there is no alternative for them but to suffer. This is a card to indicate a martyr; even if the person does not realise their behaviour is that of martyrdom.
The simple fact is, the person isn't really interested in looking for alternatives or a way out of their situation. Its different from the Two of Swords, because in that card, a person blinds themselves to the truth out of fear; in this card, a person BINDS themselves to a negative situation out of a sense of martyred long suffering.
When a person has this card appear in their reading, it means they (or someone around them) has convinced themselves and anyone who will listen that they are trapped and helpless and unable to extricate themselves from their situation or do anything to help themselves, when really, this isn't the case at all.
Its important to realise we sometimes make our own "prisons" and that no one else can take away our power.
