Emotional Change And Upheaval

The Five of Cups speaks of a deep sadness and grief that has occurred in somebody's relationships.  It can appear when a relationship ends, or changes significantly in some manner; when someone that was cared about dies or leaves, or when someone has been disappointed terribly in another.  This sounds very negative however there are many ways this card can manifest itself.

For example a mother may turn up this card when her last child is about to "leave the nest".  This in itself is not a negative thing at all!  But, nevertheless, it is a time of sadness for the mother.  A father could turn up this card in a reading depicting the marriage of his daughter!  A happy event;  and yet tinged by an inner sadness at the change in relationship which is about to occur.

All relationships must change.  We know this and accept it, however it is often sad when it happens.  We cant help wishing things could stay the same and feeling a bit sad about the change taking place.  Sometimes this can be extremely emotional, and yet positive at the same time!  This is a card of conflicting emotions over relationship changes.

Relationships

When this card appears in a relationship reading for someone, it means someone they love or care about has left, died, or disappointed them in some manner, or that there is a deep change in the relationship which saddens them.  For example, a close friend could have this card appear in a reading depicting her girlfriend's upcoming marriage, to demonstrate her inner sadness at the change in their friendship.

Reversed

When the card is reversed, it still indicates a deep change in a relationship but speaks of a matter-of-fact acceptance and contentment in the change that is taking place.
