Mastering The Tarot, by Paul Fenton Smith
There are many theories on the history of the Tarot. However its widely believed that they were developed in Italy sometime during the 15th Century. People used to play a game with them that was similar to Bridge, but the 21 Major Arcana cards were used as permanent trumps which could be played no matter which suite was led and were higher than all the other cards; the game was called Triumphs and it was extremely popular. Over several hundred years the game drifted into different countries and changes were made to the pictures and the game itself. Occultists became fascinated with the symbolic pictures and devised meanings for the cards; hence the Tarot became the tool of divination that it is today.
The Tarot Cards Depicted On This Web Site
A. E. Waite (1857-1942), was an English Christian occult philosopher, and a member of the Order of the Golden Dawn. Eventually he broke from the order and founded his own school of mystical thought. He worked with a fellow Order of the Golden Dawn member who was an artist named Pamela Coleman Smith Waite to create the deck depicted on this web site. This deck is the best one to learn with, as its symbology is so widely recognised. However there are many beautiful decks available and once you have learned the basics of the cards, you may choose to get a deck that more closely reflects yourself.
Learning The Art Of The Tarot
To learn the Tarot effectively, you should read as many tutorials and meanings as possible. The Tarot is such a personal tool of divination, and the people who use them each put their own subtle spin on the cards; what one teacher says will be slightly different, or even very different, to what another teachers says. This does not make one teacher right, and one wrong. It is up to you, the student, to find your own personal vibes for each card. This takes time and practice, and you will find that you agree somewhat with one teacher, not at all with another, and completely with another! This is absolutely fine.... this is in fact imperative. You need to listen to your own instincts and feelings as you learn the meanings and handle the cards.
There is no 'fast tracking' learning the Tarot. It takes time to begin to tap into your own instincts. Consider the Tarot (and all other divination tools for that matter) a kind of "channel" through which you are concentrating your own psychic abilities; what the tarot does is amplify a gift you already have. To strengthen this gift means you have to use it! This is why simply learning the meanings of the cards is not enough. Although you can give readings relying solely on card meanings only, and that is exactly what you will be doing in the early days, this is not the true objective of learning the art of the Tarot. The real objective is to get you to use your psychic abilities through the cards, and in tandem with the cards; for you to build up a personal relationship with the cards, and to imbue your own personal magic into the symbolism of the cards. As time goes on, each card will be like a friend to you; on seeing each symbol, you will immediately associate feelings, thoughts, and instincts; and you will begin to see card layouts as an entire story spread before your eyes rather than individual cards that need to be interpreted separately and then put back together.
Most of all, have fun learning the tarot, and be aware of your growing abilities. We suggest that you do other things to sharpen your psychic awareness such as meditation, astrology and numerology, esoteric studies, and work with other tools of divination. The internet is a fun medium, but its also important to have books to refer to (and a lot easier when you are doing your tarot work away from your computer!)
